Description
Darley Fulks (1895-1990) was the most remarkable fiddler I ever knew. Living most of his life in Wolfe Co., on the western edge of the eastern Kentucky mountains, his music diverged sharply from the styles of Stepp, Strong, and Salyer who lived in adjoining counties. Much of his repertoire came from his grandfather and other fiddlers of that generation and therefore represents some of the oldest fiddle music we can trace in Kentucky. In his youth, he traveled as an oil rigger to Michigan and Texas and picked up tunes everywhere he went. He also absorbed the black fiddle style and repertoire of Kentucky’s inner bluegrass region. A visit to Darley was like stepping back into the 19th century. Every tune led to a story and an association with the person who had played it, delivered with seriousness and solemnity and reinforced with the tap of his bow on my knee. With his blues, rags, breakdowns, waltzes, schottisches, two-steps, and slow airs, and his depth of feeling, he was to me the quintessential Kentucky fiddler. – John Harrod
