Description

Muncy Vance Gaultney (July 7, 1906-March 20, 1988) was an old-time fiddle and banjo player from Ashe County, NC. His influences included local musician, Nancy Blevins Baker, on fiddle and her daughter, Ida Francis, on banjo. He was also heavily influenced by the playing of local fiddle legend, Gilliam Banmon Grayson. He played shows with Gilliam’s musical partner, Henry Whitter, and also played in a group called the Carolina Ridge Runners with brothers Fred and William Worth Taylor. Muncy spent time working in a cotton mill and on the railroad. He eventually opened a small antique shop in Ashe County and also wrote regular articles for a regional newspaper called “The Plow”. He is well remembered for being an all-around character and for preserving several rare fiddle tunes, some of which are included on this disk. These rare tunes are still played in northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia due to his influence.
